Innkeeper's Lodge Aylesbury (South), Weston Turville Aylesbury
Originally built as a private dwelling in 1854, the Five Bells is thought to have taken its name from the peal of five bells, which can be heard ringing out from St. Mary's Church Tower nearby. The Five Bells still maintains a farmyard garden, a reminder of how closely its history is tied in with the area's rural past. Sitting at the foot of the Chiltern Hills nestles the ancient Aylesbury village of Weston Turville. Venture onto the hills and you'll be following the famous Icknield Way - one of the oldest roads in Great Britain. When the Romans came to the area, they built Akeman Street which crossed the ancient Icknield Way. And it's near this crossing that the Anglo-Saxon village is found. Weston Turville was first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. Back then it was called 'Westone', which is Old English for 'Western estate'. Over the centuries the village developed as five distinct areas (called 'ends'), Brook End, Church End, South End, World's End and West End. And during it's long history based around agriculture it was one of the main centres for breeding Aylesbury Ducks during the 19th century. Today the ducks are safe and instead, bird-watchers flock to the nearby Weston Turville Reservoir and nature reserve to check-out the wildlife.
