About City of Bristol

Bristol was known by the Saxons as Brycg stowe, 'the settlement by the bridge'. It was well-placed for maritime trade and became a successful port and market town. The Normans safeguarded the flourishing town with Bristol Castle, built to guard approaches by land. Remnants of Bristol's former stronghold can still be found in Castle Park.

In the 1200s a new bridge linked the old town of Bristol with the growing suburb of Redcliffe. The development of Redcliffe meant that Bristol was divided between Gloucestershire and Somerset. Bristol became a county in 1373 by royal charter, and although the political administration has varied over the years, the City of Bristol is recognised as a county today.

Bristol is one of the largest cities in England, a world-renowned business centre, and a place where education and arts flourish. The Port of Bristol is a uniquely beautiful and historic attraction, testimony to Bristol's success in the trade industry. Use the links below to discover more about the county.
