About County Durham

County Durham is a sea-facing county of vivid contrasts, from the high cliffs of its Heritage coastline and its bleak, rugged moors, to smooth, inland valleys and a city steeped in political history.

County Durham was once the territory of the Prince Bishops of Durham, medieval church leaders endowed with far-reaching powers. Durham Cathedral, founded in 995, is a superb reminder of the age of these implicit rulers. It is one of the finest examples of cathedral architecture in the world, and holds the tombs of St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede. Durham Castle was built to house the Prince Bishops in suitable refinement. In 1837 the last Prince Bishop granted the castle to Durham University and it now serves as a residence for students.

With stone-walled fields, wide moors, areas of unspoilt natural beauty and exquisitely-preserved historic buildings, there is much to discover in County Durham. Use the links below for more information on the county. Alternatively, try searching for a district, town or parish within County Durham.
