About Cumbria

Cumbria is a dramatic, beautiful and inspiring landscape, home to the Lake District National Park. It teems with wildlife and lush woodland, with glacier lakes, towering mountains and wild fells. Its ancient, natural rock sequences display a dramatic record dating back 500 million years, with evidence of colliding continents, deep oceans and tropical seas.

The human settlements in Cumbria date back to prehistoric times, with traces of field systems, stone circles and burial cairns. The landscape is scattered with old Roman roads and forts, and part of Hadrian's Wall, in the northernmost parts of the county, is an unnerving reminder of Rome's indisputable dominance.

With its commanding landscapes, nourishing vegetation and compelling natural history, Cumbria has been a place for reflection and inspiration for many of Britain's great writers. Dove Cottage, the home of William Wordsworth, is now a museum to his life and work. Use the links below for more information on the county.
