The village of Beer is located in the south east of Devon, England, on Lyme Bay. The village's name has not derived from the alcoholic drink, but instead has it's meaning in the old Anglo-Saxon word "bearu" (meaning "grove"), a reference to the original forestation that once surrounded the village.
As with many locations in Devon, Beer is a picturesque coastal village, 25 miles from Exeter, that grew up around a smugglers' cove and caves which were once used to store contraband goods, which now form part of the attraction of the village. Many buildings here are faced with a flint taken from local chalk rock.
Historically, the main sources of income for the town include fishing and lace production. Boats are winched up the beach as there is no harbour, and fresh fish is sold nearby.
