About Hemel Hempstead

Much of Hemel Hempstead's early history remains blissfully untouched in the quaint area of the Old Town, its original centre. It is home to the church of St Mary, built in 1140, one of the finest remaining examples of Norman architecture in the county.

The significant expansion of the town began after World War II, when it was designated as one of the proposed New Towns, to house the displaced population of London after the Blitz. By 1951 there was a waiting list of 10,000 wishing to move to the area. New developments surrounded the original town on all sides, and a proposal for Hemel's famous Plough or 'Magic' Roundabout was accepted.

Hemel Hempstead continues to expand and redevelop. The Marlowes Shopping Centre has recently been supplemented by the new Riverside complex, and the town's tallest building, once the Kodak headquarters, is to be developed into apartments.
