About Witney

Witney is a delightful example of a Cotswold market town. It has retained much of its historic charm and remains legendary for its manufacture of blankets since the Middle Ages. The quality of their esteemed blankets was known worldwide, and although the last blanket mill closed in 2002, the association is still fondly felt by visitors and locals alike.

The market square contains one of the town's most distinctive landmarks, the Buttercross. This was a medieval meeting place where people from neighboring towns would gather to buy butter and eggs. Witney still hosts regular farmers' markets in their bustling town square.

Witney is set in the valley of the River Windrush. It is clearly proud of its cultural heritage and has taken great care to preserve its character. It has also progressed into a modern, lively town.
